New Archbishop of Toronto Appointed

Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Francis (Frank) Leo, currently Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Montreal, as the 14th Archbishop of Toronto. The archbishop-designate succeeds Cardinal Thomas Collins, who has served the archdiocese since 2007. The new archbishop will be installed at a ceremony at St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica on a date to be confirmed in the coming days. During this time of transition in the archdiocese, we give thanks for Cardinal Collins and his service to the Church and welcome Archbishop-designate Leo, who will be joining the community very soon. Please continue to keep these shepherds close in prayer in the days ahead.

Humanitarian Relief Turkey and Syria Earthquake

Two devastating earthquakes and hundreds of violent aftershocks in Turkey and Syria in early February have caused great destruction in both countries. The Archdiocese of Toronto will accept donations and channel funds through Catholic partners (including Caritas Canada, Aid to the Church in Need, CNEWA, and Jesuits International) to support relief efforts underway. Those wishing to help may do so in the following ways:

ShareLife Thank You!

A big thank you to everyone for raising $218,029 for ShareLife in 2022!

Here is a letter from Cardinal Collins:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As begin our year with much hope, I am reminded of the enormous challenges we have faced over the last two years. It was a difficult time, but our resiliency as a community showed what we can accomplish if we work together. While I am grateful that our community is slowly getting back on its feet, the reality is our neighbours continue to suffer from the effects of the pandemic, world conflicts, violence, global hunger, and poverty.

Amidst your own challenges, you have always been there for them with open hearts and outstretched hands. As I reflect on your compassion and generosity, the Parable of the Good Samaritan comes to mind. Throughout the pandemic, parishioners like you never wavered in your kindness and support for the poor, the marginalized, and those who have lost hope, with no one else to turn to.

This year, the ShareLife Parish Campaign raised $13.7 million. Despite all the economic challenges, you continued to show your willingness to give. I want to thank you for your dedication and generosity as you shared your blessings with our brothers and sisters in need. May we constantly live by the Good Samaritan’s example of love and compassion by reaching out to those we encounter at the side of the road.

Sincerely in Christ, Thomas Cardinal Collins, Archbishop of Toronto
